Dear Braunschweig concert audience,
in 2020 we celebrate the 250th birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven! Its work and mediation services towards bourgeois society, which developed rapidly as a result of the French Revolution in 1789, was essential for the development of the “classical” concert system as we know and love it today with all its facets.
No orchestra will want to avoid the task of recreating the work of this composer, which is always present on the schedule even without an anniversary event, in a special, possibly new way and perhaps making unexpected classifications. The Braunschweig State Orchestra, for example, is offering you a performance of the »Missa solemnis« for the first time in its symphony concert series; in collaboration with the choir of the State Theater and the KonzertChor Braunschweig.
However, contextualization’s form the real focus of our mediation approach. The “Myth 9th Symphony” cycle is an essential programmatic element in which we will first play the corresponding symphonies by Gustav Mahler and Anton Bruckner for you. In addition, the “Bauhaus” cycle offers a juxtaposition with a completely different, sustainable phenomenon of conveying art and creative culture to society. Perhaps in this context the encounter of the “Pastoral” with the “Symphony of the Big City” will be an event for you with special insights. We would be extremely happy about that! And we are happy, that with Olga Scheps we can start our new series »Artist in Residence« for you. The brilliant pianist, our other musical guests, the ladies and gentlemen of the state orchestra and I hope that your interest has been aroused. Because we are all looking forward to you!

Three dates in December are reserved on the Srba Dinic’s calendar for appearances at the famous Semperoper Dresden. The Dresden Semperoper is an architectural monument, a symbol of this city and the epitome of important opera art worldwide.
The opera house has a long history of premieres, including major works by Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss.
Under the music direction of the Srba Dinic will be performed the opera „Hänsel und Gretel“. Engelbert Humperdinck created opera on the basis of the Brothers Grimm the most famous fairy tale. Originally conceived as a play for his own family after texts by his sister Adelheid Wette, „Hänsel und Gretel“ became Humperdinck’s first work for the opera stage, which broke all records for success. Humperdinck, who began his career as an assistant to Richard Wagner, used Wagner’s harmonic techniques, although with a lighter touch suitable for the fairy-tale subject matter he adapted. In the staging of Katharina Thalbach, this template is enriched by other characters from the Grimm fairy tales. Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White and the evil wolf kidnap children as adults goes on a musical journey, following in the footsteps of the well-known fantasy figures through the eerily fairy tale forest.
Maestro Srba Dinic continues his work with the Staatsorchester Brauschweig. As part of the Bauhaus Cycle, two pieces will be performed, orchestra suite “Five Klee Pictures” by composer Peter Maxwell Davies and “Pictures from the Exhibition”, by Modest Mussorgsky. Composer Peter Maxwell Davies was inspired with the paints of Swiss painter, watercolorist and draftsman, Paul Klee, who hid his love for music in several titles of his paintings. The music which composer was writing immediately before his appointment as Director of Music at Cirencester Grammar School in 1959 was of quite startling originality, and after many years the shock effect has scarcely diminished. With his composition he not only demanded his students’ tonal and rhythmic skills, but also improvisation.
Mussorgsky wrote a stunning suite “Pictures at an Exhibition”, in honor of a painter friend Vladimir Hartmann. The pieces in Pictures mostly try to capture in music the sketches, watercolors and architectural designs that were shown publicly at the Hartmann exhibition. Many musicians, from Henry Wood to Leopold Stokowski, have arranged the work for full orchestra, but it’s far and away the 1922 version by Maurice Ravel that receives the most regular performance and praise today.
The premiere performance of the Gaetano Donizetti’s opera “Don Pasquale” under the musical direction of Srba Dinic will be held on the 24th of September in the prestigious Teatro Colón of Buenos Aires, one of the most important Opera Houses in the world.
The production features the stage direction of Fabio Sparvoli and three casts headed by Nicola Ulivieri, Gustavo Gibert and Víctor Torres in the leading role.
Don Pasquale will play from the 24th of September till the 2th of October.
When the bufo seemed reviled and the arrival of the serious opera of Romanticism was imminent, Donizetti showed that the possibilities of this genre could still be reformulated and exploited. Don Pasquale is often considered the last great opera buffa of the Italian school belcantista. Set in nineteenth-century Rome, with an archetypal protagonist (the crazed old man of love, attracted by a younger woman) is the 69th title of the genius of Bergamo. It was premiered in 1843, at the Teatro Italiano in Paris, the city where Donizetti lived in the final stage of his compositional career.
Don Pasquale was written in three acts with an Italian libretto by Giovanni Ruffini.
The Teatro Colón (Colón Theatre) in Buenos Aires is one of the most important opera houses in the world. Its rich and prestigious history and its exceptional acoustics and architectural features rank it among theatres such as Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Paris Opera House, the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Metropolitan Opera House in New York.
Throughout the history of the theatre, no artist of importance of the 20th century has failed to appear on its stage. It’s enough to mention singers such as Enrico Caruso, Claudia Muzio, Maria Callas, Régine Crespin, Birgit Nilsson, Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti, dancers such as Vaslav Nijinski, Margot Fonteyn, Maia Plisetskaia, Rudolf Nureyev, Mijail Barishnikov, and conductors such as Arturo Toscanini, Herbert von Karajan, Héctor Panizza, Ferdinand Leitner, among dozens of others.

Concerts in front of the Town Hall in Hamburg have become a traditional meeting place for Srba Dinic and Symphoniker Hamburg. The audiences are used to hearing an attractive program at the concerts. This year it will include overtures and arias by Rossini, Verdi, Puccini, Tchaikovsky, Glinka and Manuel de Falla . Soloists will be Sofija Petrovic, soprano and Kwonsoo Jeon, tenor. The two young singers are performing for the first time with the Symphoniker Hamburg, having deserved the trust in them with some remarkable roles in opera performances. Sofija Petrovic’s name was in the production of Bastille operas in Paris, and Kwonsoon Jeon is known for his roles in Staatstheater in Braunschweig. This is an opportunity for them both to present themselves to the the Town Hall audience – with the support of well rehearsed cooperation between Srba Dinic and one of the best orchestras in Hamburg.

On the second day of Kustendorf Classical festival programme young talents will be competing for the “Golden Matryoska” award. Srba Dinic and the symphonic orchestra will be preparing for the second concert evening featuring Aleksandar Madzar. The renowned pianist will play one of the most beautiful piano concerts, Tchaikovsky b-minor. Madzar was Emir Kusturica’s guest back in 2014 at the very beginning of the festival; then he performed a recital while this year he will have a symphonic orchestra behind him. Another soloist, tenor Vasiliy Gerelo will enrich the musical repertoire by singing old romances. In order to fully create the atmosphere of Russian music, the orchestra will perform Modest Mussorgsky’s A Night on Bold Mountain, symphonic poem. This will not be a St. John’s Eve with witches appearing as in Gogol’s story which had inspired Mussorgsky. This night the Bold Mountain will be Mecavnik mountain, with artists and young talents from different parts of the world. All together led by Srba Dinic’s baton they will gift the audience a most beautiful musical event, and will take experience and new knowledge with them to serve them for the rest of their lives.

After seven years former Bolshoi Festival has grown into Kustendorf Classical Festival. Thus the director Emir Kusturica is substantiating his idea to have film, theatre and musical festivals on Mecavnik, Mokra Gora. Srba Dinic and symphonic orchestra have been shaping the musical programme for years with the participation of world class musical stars. The festival will open with Berlioz symphony Harold in Italy and the main role of melancholic dreamer is entrusted to a violist Yuriy Basmet. Continuing the tradition that the programme should include works of Russian composers, the orchestra will perform Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring in the second part of the concert. This piece, originally conceived as a ballet, has had a large success at concert performances. Due to its polytonality, complex rhythm and use of musical-folklore arias, it is considered as a highly complex orchestral piece. With such an attractive musical programme, high quality orchestra and Srba Dinic’s experience, Kustendorf Classical Festival will be a special and rewarding event for visitors. At the open air concert light effects will colour the hill of Mecavnik, once a bare hill and today the venue of artistic production.

Braunschweig is a town with sophisticated audience which cherishes its cultural tradition. Staatstheater cultivates different genres throughout the season, from Baroque to modern composers; the event which certainly gathers together audiences of all generations and various tastes is the grand open-air concert. The town park is the place which draws families and friends to spend a nice day together and listen special music program. On this day the question of repertoire is not asked since everybody trusts GMD Srba Dinic and Staatsorchester Braunschweig. The park will be ringing with the most beautiful themes by Verdi, Puccini, Bernstein, Elgar, Shostakovich and Wagner. This year is big anniversary, ten years of this beautiful event and the program will be full of the most beautiful pieces from the last nine years. Lots of Braunschweig citizens grown up with these melodies, now Theater Braunschweig is ready to welcome new generations too.

The friendship between Srba Dinic and violinist Roman Simovic started in 2017 when together they opened Bolshoy Festival organized by Emir Kusturica. They will be continuing their cooperation in Braunschweig at the performance closing the season’s series of symphonic concerts. Bringing great joy to the audience they will perform Tchaikovsky’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D-major. The composer loved the Concerto, so unsurprisingly it is loved by audiences. Resulting from a great artistic inspiration Tchaikovsky wrote it in 1878 and expressed his immense life joy through it. The motifs of life’s light and darkness will alternate in the continuation of the concert when the orchestra will perform Brahms’ Fourth Symphony in E-minor. In last symphony Brahms composed, he showed his mature creativeness both in musical sense and in the sense of instrumentation variety and qualities demonstrable by an orchestra. With this particularly beautiful and demanding programme Staatsorhcester Braunschweig and GMD Srba Dinic will close the cycle of symphonic concerts. Next year’s programme has already been publicised so it is to be expected that Stadthalle will continue to be a favourite gathering place for classical music lovers.

For the very end of the season Srba Dinic and the Braunschweig theatre are preparing another premiere. A German composer, pianist and theoretician Aribert Reimann wrote the opera L’invisible which saw its premiere in Berlin in 2017. Reimann always finds inspiration for his opera in literary classics: Shakespeare, Kafka, Lorca and others. He wrote this opera based on a work by Maurice Maeterlinck, Belgian writer and Nobel laureate. Three dramas are entwined in it. At first view different, they are connected with the same motifs, the feelings of sorrow, fear and death. It is a lyrical trilogy with an intensive orchestral sound, with numerous soloists on the stage and modern direction. In the opera’s short life of mere two years, it has received a number of good reviews. It is time that the Braunschweig audience, second after Berlin, give it their opinion. Srba Dinic with soloists and orchestra will demonstrate why Reimann is one of the most awarded contemporary German composers.
