G. Rossini: The Italian Girl in Algiers

The theatre ensemble Palacio de Bellas Artes will close yet another successful season with an opera premiere. The theatre repertoire has not presented a piece by Rossini for a long while, so the Italian Girl in Algiers will be interesting to all those wishing to hear the Italian composer who was a role model to the greats such as Verdi and Bellini. Thanks to the Italian Girl in Algiers, Rossini’s works started being performed outside Italy, so today opera lovers even as far as Mexico have the opportunity to enjoy the southern temperament close to them too. Guadalupe Paz in the title role will have a tall order with her voice section pervading the whole opera; nonetheless, Srba Dinic’s conducting will make it another authentic opera experience both for performers and audience.

Songs of happiness, wine, love and suffering will fill the Palacio de Bellas Artes with the famous concert cantata Carmina Burana on the repertoire. In 1934 Karl Orf found the book Carmina Burana published in 1847. It is an illuminated manuscript, a collection of over 1000 songs in Latin, German and medieval French. He selected 24 of them and shaped them in his music which radiates with simplicity and beauty. Orf put a ballet, symphonic orchestra, a large number of percussions, two pianos, two four-voice mixed choruses, children’s chorus and soloists. It is extremely difficult to synchronise such a large number of people in the composition which lasts for more than an hour. For such work Srba Dinic has special inspiration – to present the famous 20th century German composer to Mexican audience and to convey pure emotions for which this piece has been recognized and loved by generations of music lovers all over the world.
