In Braunschweig theatre opera premiers come thick and fast. As one of the most complex in opera repertoire Strauss’s Elektra has always been a challenge both for an orchestra and singers. Through commonly present atonality and interwoven sections, Strauss depicted family relations burdened with hatred and pain. He masterfully drew the abysses of human soul and desire for revenge from Sophocles’ drama and put them in the foreground. Maida Hundeling’s soprano has already won the reputation of a soloist who can breathe life to dramatic moments on the stage, and with Srba Dinic’s leadership and the support of the whole ensemble this will doubtless be an opera event worthy of our attention.
